Les Ethiopiques d'Héliodore, composées au troisième siècle apr. J.-C, constituent un récit romanesque riche en descriptions sur le pays des Ethiopiens. L'originalité de l'oeuvre tient au fait qu'elle conserve des témoignages susceptibles de constituer un champ d'expérience pour le lecteur moderne à la recherche d'informations sur le royaume de Méroé. Héliodore s'intéresse non seulement à la géographie et à la société, mais également à la langue et aux écritures, à la religion et à l'économie méroïtique.
